Castlegate is one of the most historic parts of the city. It contains the site of the medieval castle and occupies a prominent position overlooking the River Don.It provides one of the most important City Centre locations situated at the gateway to the city from the M1.
The Masterplan review, published by Yorkshire Forward, Sheffield City Council and Creative Sheffield in January 2008, seeks to strengthen the links between the city centre, Victoria Quays and the Riverside to encourage a greater range of uses including leisure, residential and office development.

Progress to achieve this is well underway with completion of the first phase at The Square as well the near completion of the northern section of the Inner Relief Road. The development of Castlegate remains a key priority to the city.
Fulfilment of the Masterplan objectives relating to land use diversification, connections to the wider City Centre and improved environmental quality have been strengthened by the plans to relocate the market to The Moor.
The result of the extensive regeneration completed and planned is a vibrant and lively new area of the city – with a thriving business community at its heart.
